How Far in Advance Should You Book Bridal Hair and Makeup?
One of the easiest wedding-planning tasks to underestimate is booking your hair and makeup team. Unlike some vendors who can accommodate multiple weddings in a day, bridal beauty teams have a limited number of artists and a limited number of wedding mornings they can take on.
So, when should you book?
There isn’t one perfect timeline for every wedding, but if you have a specific beauty team in mind, earlier is usually better—especially for a Saturday wedding in San Diego.
When should I book my wedding hair and makeup?
As a general planning guideline, consider beginning your search for bridal hair and makeup around 9–12 months before your wedding.
That doesn’t mean you’re too late if your wedding is six months—or even a few weeks—away. Availability varies considerably by date, party size, location, and the number of artists needed.
But if you’re getting married during a popular wedding season, have a large wedding party, or already know which beauty team you’d like to work with, booking earlier gives you more options.

Why do popular wedding dates book so early?
Bridal beauty is different from booking a traditional salon appointment.
For an on-location wedding, artists reserve a significant portion of the day for one wedding. There is travel involved, equipment to prepare, a timeline to follow, and often several consecutive services for the bride and wedding party.
Larger parties may also require multiple artists working together.
That means there are only so many weddings a professional bridal team can accommodate on the same morning—particularly on Saturdays.
Do I need to know how many people want services before booking?
Not necessarily.
It’s helpful to have an estimate, but it’s completely normal not to know your final service count when you’re first booking your vendors.
Some brides haven’t asked their wedding party yet. Others aren’t sure whether certain family members will want hair, makeup, both, or neither.
What’s important is understanding the beauty company’s policies before reserving your date. Ask whether there is a minimum number of services, when your final service count is due, and whether services can be added or removed later.
At Coastline Bridal, Saturday weddings have a four-service minimum, while smaller weddings, elopements, and bride-only services may be available depending on the date and availability.
Should I book my bridal preview before I book the wedding?
Usually, no.
Your bridal preview—sometimes called a hair and makeup trial—is typically scheduled after your wedding services are reserved, not before.
A preview gives you the opportunity to see your complete look, make adjustments, and communicate your preferences with your artist before the wedding day.
If you're on the fence and just want to see how you would look in hair and makeup from our team, book us for your engagement photos or a fun night out.
You don’t need to know exactly what you want before booking, either. Inspiration photos are helpful, but part of the process is determining what works with your features, hair, dress, overall wedding style, and how you want to feel.
At Coastline Bridal, bridal previews are optional but recommended.
What if I’m planning a large wedding party?
If you’re expecting several people to receive services, booking earlier becomes even more important.
A larger wedding party doesn’t necessarily mean everyone has to start getting ready at sunrise. Instead, your beauty company can determine how many artists are needed based on the number of services and your required ready time.
For example, a wedding with ten hair and makeup services may require a very different artist schedule than a wedding with four.
This is one reason we ask brides for their ready-by time rather than expecting them to build their own beauty schedule. Once the details are finalized, Coastline Bridal creates the wedding-morning beauty timeline and determines the appropriate artist coverage.
What if my wedding is only a few months away?
Ask anyway.
There is no point at which you should assume every reputable artist is booked without checking. Cancellations happen, some dates are naturally less busy than others, and teams with multiple artists may have more flexibility than individual artists.
Weekday weddings, Sundays, intimate weddings, elopements, and off-season dates can sometimes have more availability as well.
What should I have before I inquire?
You don’t need a completed wedding timeline or finalized beauty look.
Ideally, have these basics:
Your wedding date
Your getting-ready location or approximate area
An estimated number of hair and makeup services
Your approximate ready-by time, if known
If some of those details aren’t finalized yet, that’s okay. Your beauty team should be able to help you determine what information is actually needed and when.
How do I know I’ve actually reserved my wedding date?
This is an important question to ask any wedding vendor.
An inquiry doesn’t necessarily reserve a date. Neither does a consultation or proposal unless the company’s policy specifically says it does.
Make sure you understand exactly what is required to officially book.
For Coastline Bridal, your wedding date is reserved once we receive your signed agreement and $450 retainer. The retainer is applied toward your contracted services.
Until those booking requirements are completed, the date is not considered reserved.
Start early, but don’t panic if you didn’t
Wedding planning comes with enough deadlines already. Booking bridal beauty early gives you the best opportunity to choose a team whose work and approach genuinely fit you, but there isn’t a magic date after which you’ve missed your chance.
