One of the first questions that comes up when planning the wedding morning is: How long does hair and makeup actually take?
The answer depends on your services, wedding party size, and when everyone needs to be ready. But your beauty timeline shouldn’t be something you have to figure out on your own.

How long does bridal hair and makeup take?
For planning purposes, we typically plan about 60–75 minutes for bridal hair and approximately 60–75 minutes for bridal makeup.
Some looks may take more or less time depending on hair length and texture, extensions, the complexity of the hairstyle, skin preparation, and the finished look you’re creating.
We would rather build a little breathing room into the morning than create a schedule where everyone feels rushed.
How long does hair and makeup take for the wedding party?
For wedding party and guest services, a good planning estimate is generally 45–60 minutes per hair service and 45–60 minutes per makeup service.
Again, these aren’t stopwatch appointments. One person may need less time while another needs a little more.
What matters most is the overall schedule—and making sure the team has enough time to complete every service without putting the rest of your wedding timeline behind.
How do I know what time hair and makeup should start?
Start with the time you need to be completely ready, not the ceremony time.
There may be several things happening after hair and makeup but before you walk down the aisle: getting dressed, bridal portraits, wedding party photos, a first look, family photos, transportation to the venue, or simply having a few quiet minutes before everything begins.
Your photographer or planner can help determine when you need to be photo-ready. Once we have that time, we can work backward to create the beauty schedule.

Should the bride go first or last?
Usually, neither.
Putting the bride absolutely last can sound appealing because her hair and makeup will be freshest, but it can also create unnecessary pressure if anything runs behind.
If the bride goes last, we typically run into lots of interruptions from all the final details and vendors arriving. Plus the bride can feel rushed if she doesn't have a little bit of breathing room between her hair and makeup being finalized and getting dressed.
Instead, we generally prefer to position the bride strategically within the schedule so she has enough time for services without becoming the final thing standing between the entire wedding party and the photographer.
The exact placement depends on the size of the party, the number of artists, and what is happening throughout the morning.
How many hair and makeup artists will we need?
That depends primarily on three things: how many services you have, when everyone needs to be ready, and how much time is available in the morning.
Adding artists allows services to happen simultaneously.
For example, a larger wedding party with an early ready time may require several artists, while a smaller group with a later ready time may be comfortably accommodated with one.
More artists aren’t automatically better. The goal is to have the right number of artists for your particular timeline and getting ready location. Does your location have the space to accommodate multiple artists?

Can everyone choose their own appointment time?
We don’t recommend it.
A wedding beauty schedule is different from a day of individual salon appointments. Hair and makeup services need to work together as one coordinated timeline.
Allowing everyone to select their preferred time can create empty chairs, delays, and unnecessary stress.
Once your services are finalized, Coastline Bridal creates the schedule so everyone knows where they need to be and when.
What happens if someone is late?
This is one of the reasons an organized schedule matters.
Each person should be ready for her scheduled service with any necessary preparation completed beforehand.
If someone isn’t available when her appointment begins, the artist may need to move to the next person to keep the overall wedding timeline on track. Depending on how late the morning is running, there may not always be enough time to complete a delayed service later.
The bride’s ready time and the overall wedding schedule remain the priority.
How should everyone prepare for hair and makeup?
Good preparation can make the morning run much more smoothly.
Unless your artist has given you different instructions, arrive with your face clean and with your hair 100% dry.
Wear something that can easily be removed without disturbing finished hair and makeup—a button-down shirt, robe, or other wide-necked garment works well.
Have extensions, hair accessories, veils, and inspiration photos accessible rather than packed away somewhere in the room.
All steaming should be completed in a separate room prior to you receiving any services. The steam creates a lot of humidity and can affect the hairstyle or makeup you receive.
And whenever possible, designate someone other than the bride to answer logistical questions once services begin.
Should we schedule extra time into the beauty timeline?
Yes. A good wedding timeline should have some breathing room.
The goal isn’t to fill every minute of the morning. It’s to create enough structure that everyone knows what is happening while still allowing for the realities of a wedding day.
Someone may need extra time. A photographer may arrive with a question. Flowers may be delivered. Someone will inevitably disappear when it’s her turn in the chair.
A little buffer helps keep those moments from becoming stressful.
When will I receive my wedding-day beauty timeline?
Your exact timeline shouldn’t be created too early because your service count, ready time, and wedding logistics may still change. Typically, we create ours 2-4 weeks prior to the wedding date.
You’ll know when your artists are arriving, when services begin, and when everyone is expected to be ready.
That means one less schedule for you to build yourself.
